CLOSE TO YOU 1970

closetoyou.jpg

Following the failure of "Offering", the powers that be were pressuring Herb and Jerry to drop the Carpenters.  However Herb still felt that he was on to a good thing and allowed them to make one more album.  Close to You came out in 1970 and within 6 weeks had gone to No.1 following the release of its first single, "(They Long to Be) Close to You".  Soon after, a second single was released.  "We've Only Just Begun" would go on to become the Carpenters "signature tune".  Those kids from Downey had done it, they'd become millionaires over night.

WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN
Words by Paul Williams
Music by Roger Nichols

We’ve only just begun to live
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we’re on our way

(We’ve only begun)
Before the rising sun we fly
So many roads to choose
We start out walking
And learn to run

(And yes! we’ve just begun)

Sharin’ horizons that are new to us
Watchin’ the signs along the way
Talkin’ it over just the two of us
Workin’ together day to day
Together
And when the evening comes we smile
So much of life ahead
We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow

(And yes! we’ve just begun)

Sharin’ horizons that are new to us
Watchin’ the signs along the way
Talkin’ it over just the two of us
Workin’ together day to day
Together, together

And when the evening comes we smile
So much of life ahead
We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow

And yes! We've just begun

(We've Only Just Begun)

LOVE IS SURRENDER
Words by John Bettis
Music by Richard Carpenter

Talk about love
How it makes life complete
You can talk all you want
Make it sound good and sweet

But the words have and empty ring
And they don't really mean a thing
Without love you are not to be found
Not to be found

For love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you care

Shout about love
And the wars will all end
You can shout "we're all brothers"
And even pretend

But you can't cover up the past
Just pretending will never last
Without love you are nothing at all
Nothing at all

For love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you care

For love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you care

MAYBE IT'S YOU
Words by John Bettis
Music by Richard Carpenter

Maybe it's you, maybe it's me
Maybe t's just the constant
Rhythm of the sea

Maybe it's just that I've never been
The kind who can
pass a lucky penny by

Maybe it's wise, maybe it's not
Maybe it's you who brought
The caring I'd forgot

Isn't it nice to talk about
The special way you
Smile whenever I'm around

Rising on the shore the ocean came
Walks among the waves of velveteen
His only thought is love for me

Couldn't we stay, or must we go
Couldn't we stay and watch
The splashing rocks we throw

Only a fool would want to leave
The paradise I find whever you're around
Only a fool

Isn’t it nice to talk about
The special way that you smile
whenever I’m around
Rising on the shore the ocean came
Walks along the waves of velveteen
His only thought was love for me
Ooh, love for me

Couldn’t we stay, or must you go
Couldn’t we stay and watch
The splashing rocks we throw
Only a fool would want to leave
The paradise I find whenever you’re around
Only a fool
Only a fool

REASON TO BELIEVE
Words and Music
By Tim Hardin

If I listen long enough to you
I'll find a way to believe that it's all true
Knowing that you lied
Straight-faced while I cried

Still I look to find a reason to believe

Someone like you
Makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you
Makes it easy to give never thinking of myself

If you took the time to change my mind
I'd find a way to leave the past behind
Knowing that you lied
Straight-faced while I cried

Someone like you
Makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you
Makes it easy to give never thinking of myself

If I listen long enough to you
I'll find a way to believe that it's all true
Knowing that you lied
Straight-faced while I cried

Still I look to find a reason to believe

Someone like you
Makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you
Makes it easy to give never thinking of myself

HELP!
Words by John Lennon
Music by Paul McCartney

When I was younger, so much
Younger than today
I never needed anybody’s help
In any way

But now these days are gone
I’m not so self assure
Now I find I’ve changed my mind
I’ve opened up the door

Help me if you can I’m feeling down
And if you do appreciate you being round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me

(Please help me)

And now my life has changed in
Oh! so many ways
My independence seems to vanish
In the haze

And every now and then
I feel so insecure
I know that I need you like
I’ve never done before

Help me if you can I’m feeling down
And if you do appreciate you being round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me

(Please help me)

Ah! ah! ah! ah!

Ah! ah! ah! ah!

Help me if you can I’m feeling down
And if you do appreciate you being round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me

(Please help me)

(THEY LONG TO BE) CLOSE TO YOU
Words by Hal David
Music by Burt Bacharach

Why do birds suddenly appear
Everytime you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Everytime you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
The angels got together and decided
To create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moondust in your hair
Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
The angels got together and decided
To create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moondust in your hair
Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Wahh ahh ahh ahh... close to you

BABY IT'S YOU
Words by Mack David
Music by Burt Bacharach
and Barry Williams

It’s not the way you smile
That touches my heart
It’s not the way you kiss
That tears me apart

Many, many nights go by
I sit alone at home I cry
Over you what can I do
Can’t help myself

(’cause baby it’s you)

You should hear what they say about you

(Cheating)

They say you’ve never
Never, never been true

Oh! oh! oh!
Doesn’t matter what they say
I’m gonna love you any old way
What can I do when it’s true?

(Don’t want nobody ’cause baby it’s you)

Many, many, many nights go by
I sit alone at home I cry
Over you what can I do?

(Can’t help myself ’cause baby it’s you)

(Wah sha la la la la laa)

I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN
Words by Hal David
Music by Burt Bacharach

(here to remind you, here to remind you,
Here to remind you, here to remind you)

What do you get when you fall in love
A guy with a pin to burst your bubble
That’s what you get for all your trouble
I’ll never fall in love again
I’ll never fall in love again

What do you get when you kiss a guy
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia
After you do, he’ll never phone you
I’ll never fall in love again
I’ll never fall in love again

Don’t tell me what it’s all about
’cause I’ve been there and I’m glad I’m out
Out of those chains, those chains that bind you
That is why I’m here to remind you

What do you get when you fall in love?
You get enough tears to fill an ocean
That's what you get for your devotion
I’ll never fall in love again
I’ll never fall in love again

What do you get when you fall in love
You only get lies and pain and sorrow
So, for at least until tomorrow
I’ll never fall in love again
I’ll never fall in love again

Don’t tell me what it’s all about
’cause I’ve been there and I’m glad I’m out
Out of those chains, those chains that bind you
That is why I’m have here to remind you
Here to remind you, here to remind you
Oh! here to remind you

What do you get when you fall in love
You only get lies and pain and sorrow
So, for at least until tomorrow
I’ll never fall in love again
I’ll never fall in love again

CRESCENT NOON
Words by John Bettis
Music by Richard Carpenter

Green september burned to october brown
Bare november led to
D
ecember’s frozen ground

The seasons stumbled round
Our drifting lives are bound
To a falling crescent noon

Feather clouds cry
A vale of tears to earth
Morning breaks and
No one sees the quiet mountain birth

Dressed in a brand new day
The sun is on it’s way
To a falling crescent noon

Somewhere in a fairytale forest
Lies one answer that is waiting to be heard

You and I were born like the breaking day
All our seasons
Aall our green septembers burn away

Slowly we’ll fade into
A sea of midnight blue
And a falling crescent noon

MR. GUDER
Words by John Bettis
Music by Richard Carpenter

Mr. Guder. Say! Mr. Guder
May I have a moment with you
Because there is something I've got to say
And please don't let it scare you away

Mr. Guder. Say! Mr. Guder
I have seen you go through a day
You're everything a robot lives for
Walk in at 9 and roll out the door at 5

You reflect the company image
You maintain their rules to live by
Shine your shoes let's keep a neat haircut
Now that you're wearing a coat and tie

Mr. Guder. Say! Mr. Guder
Some day soon may realize
You spend your life just playing a game
Where no ones wins but everyone stays the same

You reflect the company image
You maintain their rules to live by
Shine your shoes let's keep a neat haircut
Now that you're wearing a coat and tie

Mr. Guder. Say! Mr. Guder
Some day soon may realize
You spend your life just playing a game
Where no ones wins but everyone stays the same
The sa-a-a-me

Please!
Play your game!
Stay the same!

I KEPT ON LOVING YOU
Words by Paul Williams
Music by Roger Nichols

I ran away from you
And left you crying
And though I’m back to stay
You think I’m lying

But I’ve changed my ways
And my wandering days are through
Through it all I kept on loving you

Don’t worry baby please don’t cry
I’m home for good and I will never leave you
don’t worry baby please don’t cry
You must believe me I will never leave you
Never leave you

You’ve heard this song before I can’t deny it
The road is long and wide I had to try it
Though I love you girl these were things
I had to do
Through it all I kept on loving you

Don’t worry baby please don’t cry
I’m home for good and I will never leave you
don’t worry baby please don’t cry
You must believe me I will never leave you
Never leave you

ANOTHER SONG
Words by John Bettis
Music by Richard Carpenter

The moon that rose now descended
And a love once shared now had ended
And soon the day would come

And when the day had come
The light that fell at dawn was cold
The warmth of you had gone

A taste of loneliness
Cut through the earliness
And oh the winds sang of you

Softly they said
All of my favorite dreams were dead
Leaving a cloud of sadness in my head

And though I’m buried in
A sad song of the morning wind
I know the day would bring
Another song for me to sing

But when the day had come
The light that fell at dawn was cold
The warmth of you had gone

(Go-o-o-ne)
