TICKET TO RIDE
tickettoride.jpg

In 1966, Richard and Karen were looking for a recording contract.  They'd won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands contest as "The Richard Carpenter Trio" and they'd recorded some demos for RCA Victor.  However, by 1967, they were looking for a vocal contract for Karen.  They formed a 6-strong group labelled "Spectrum" but this failed to yield any results (with the exception of a minor single "Looking for Love/I'll Be Yours").  The second group they formed as a quartet called "Summerchimes" and this also failed to take off.  One advantage they did have was access to a recording studio and the ability to record demo tapes.  It was one of these demo tapes that found its way to Herb Alpert's office in 1968.  Their first album under new bandname Carpenters was "Offering"  This album was initially unsuccessful until it was renamed in 1970 to "Ticket to Ride" after its only single.  The single itself only peaked at around 43 in the charts.

INVOCATION
Words by John Bettis
Music by Richard Carpenter

For those who's eyes would see

Render them in faith to me

For all those seeking peace

In my arms their strife shall cease

And place in me the agony you bear

Nothing can impair the perfect love I bring

In a simple offering.

In a simple offering.

YOUR WONDERFUL PARADE

Words by John Bettis

Music by Richard Carpenter

Spoken

Ladies and gentlemen, may I direct your

Attention to the centre ring

Where hollow princes and shallow kings

perform their tricks while justice swings

from side to side.

And may I remind you once again

Of the spectacle about to begin

Now forming at the darkest

End of the big top.

Don't forget to take your place in line

Leave your mind behind and join

The precession of the people

By the people and for the people

Your own Wonderful Parade

Sung

Your wonderful parade
Moving through the towns that rise and then they fade
Over streets that pass the houses where you've stayed
Your wonderful parade

Your daily masquerade
Paper masks behind this face that you have made
Crumble down upon foundations that you've laid
Your daily masquerade

Stand in line try to climb
Meet your wife at cocktail time
Surely you should try and choose a better way to fall

Your marvellous charade
Never could be worth the prices that you've paid
Blindness is a part of every game you've played
Your marvellous charade

Instrumental

Stand in line try to climb
Meet your wife at cocktail time
Surely you should try and choose a better way to fall
Your marvellous charade

Your daily masquerade
Your wonderful parade

SOMEDAY

Words by John Bettis

Music by Richard Carpenter

Someday, rested from hours of sleeping
We'll stay safely behind what we're keeping
You'll seem warmer than I had remembered you
Lying so close I'll be able to feel you breathe
I could never leave

One day, when I am able to love you
I'll come back from wherever I've been to
I'll see you looking the same as you always have
Lovely, so lovely, I'll cling to the love you give
So I'll start to live

Someday is coming
If I believe it
Someday always brings the good life you knew ...
Ever back to you

How I need you
Someday, all I can give you is someday
Someday, all I can offer is someday
Please say that you'll be waiting when someday comes
Promise me this and a kiss, to keep what you are
Always close to me

How I need you
Someday, all I can give you is someday
Someday, all I can offer is someday
Please say that you'll be waiting when someday comes
Promise me this and a kiss, to keep what you are
Always close to me, someday

GET TOGETHER

Words and music

by Chet Powers

Love is but a song we sing
And fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains sing
Or make the angels cry
Though the dove is on the wing
You need not know why

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Love one another right now

Some will come and some will go
This will surely pass
When the one who left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Love one another right now

If you hear the song we sing,
You will understand
You hold the key to love and fear
It's in your trembling hand
One key unlocks them both, you know
It's at your command

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Love one another right now

Love one another right now
Love one another right now

ALL OF MY LIFE

Words and music

by Richard Carpenter

All of my life I have been waiting
For just one boy
And all of my life I have been waiting
For all the joy

Of having someone that

I can call my own
Who'll come to my side

when I am all alone

And now you are here and

I've found a whole new world
Has opened for me

a world filled with joy
A world filled with

all your love eternally

For you say you're mine
You'll love me all the time
Night and day
Come what may, and all of my life
You'll be my own

I just want someone that

I can call my own
Who'll come to my side

when I am all alone

And now you are here and

I've found a whole new world
Has opened for me

a world filled with joy
A world filled with

all your love eternally

For you say you're mine
You'll love me all the time
Night and day Come what may,

and all of my life You' will be my own

You will be my own

You will be my own

TURN AWAY

Words by John Bettis

Music by Richard Carpenter

I guess you know what it's all about
All the answers seem so clear to you
You know just exactly what do you want to do
And never allow a feeling of doubt

I guess you see where your road can lead
And all the pain that you have in a store
For now you have chosen to look every door
And find on your own what you think you need

Turn away, find a way your own
I'll be there waiting here to say
Turn away, find a way your own
I'll still be calling your name

And if tried to show you how
Tomorrow is never like yesterday
Would you change your mind and see things my way
Or are you afraid that I'll bring you down?

Turn away, find a way your own
I'll be there waiting here to say
Turn away, find a way your own
I'll still be calling your name

Turn away, find a way your own
I'll be there waiting here to say
Turn away, find a way your own
I'll still be calling your name

Turn away, find a way your own
I'll be there waiting here to say
Turn away, find a way your own
I'll still be calling your name

Turn away, find a way your own
I'll be there waiting here to say
Turn away, find a way your own
I'll still be calling your name

TICKET TO RIDE

Words by John Lennon

Music by Paul McCartney

I Think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The boy that's driving me mad is going away

He's got a ticket to ride
He's got a ticket to ride
He's got a ticket to ride
And he don't care

He said that living with me
Is bringing him down, yeah
He would never be free
When I was around

He's got a ticket to ride
He's got a ticket to ride
He's got a ticket to ride
And he don't care

Don't know why he's ridin' so high
He ought to do right
He ought to do right by me
Before he gets to sayin' good-bye
He ought to do right
He ought to do right by me

I Think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The boy that's driving me mad

is going away, ah

He's got a ticket to ride
He's got a ticket to ride
He's got a ticket to ride
And he don't care

Don't care
Think I'm gonna be sad...

Think I'm gonna be sad...

Think I'm gonna be sad...

Think I'm gonna be sad...

DON'T BE AFRAID

Words and Music

By Richard Carpenter

Don't be afraid to love

And get love returned
Don't be afraid to tell

Everyone you're learned

That love is a groovy thing
It knows how to make you sing
Ant it fills up your life

with sunshine and joy
Don't be afraid to give

All you've got to give
One of these days you'll

Find that's the way to live
And living is what we

all were put on this earth to do
So come on and live and be happy
Don't be afraid to love

Love is a groovy thing
It knows how to make you sing
Ant it fills up your life

with sunshine and joy

Don't be afraid to give

All you've got to give
One of these days you'll

Find that's the way to live
And living is what we

all were put on this earth to do
So come on and live and be happy
Oh, live and be happy
Don't be afraid to love

Don't be afraid to love
Don't be afraid to love
Don't be afraid to love

WHAT'S THE USE?

Words by John Bettis

Music by Richard Carpenter

Getting away from all the things that need doing
Lazily here to lose the afternoon
Lying around here on the ground
It's as close to getting up as I can go

Taking a chance to free myself from my worries
Cover them well enough and no one sees
Nobody knows until they show
And the only thing to do is try to cover them again

Hurry yourself, what's the use?
Mountains of wealth, I refuse
To be somebody's slave for a dime
I've got plenty of mountains
I'm lookin' to find, spending my time

Lying around, here on the ground
It's as close to getting up as I can go

Pleasing myself is all that really needs doing
Everything else begins but never ends
Listen to me and you'll agree
That a man is better off if he has come to realize

Hurry yourself, what's the use?
Mountains of wealth, I refuse
To be somebody's slave for a dime
I've got plenty of mountains
I'm lookin' to find, spending my time

Hurry yourself, what's the use?
Mountains of wealth, I refuse
To be somebody's slave for a dime
I've got plenty of mountains
I'm lookin' to find, spending my time

ALL I CAN DO

Words by John Bettis

Music by Richard Carpenter

Ooh, ooh, ba
Yesterday I thought you'd stay
I thought you'd see things my way
But now I see my hopes may be dead

I should have known when you said
I was the one you wanted
Wanting meant nothing more than today

All I can do is cry over you
And hope you return someday
All I can do is cry over you
Ever since you've gone away

Every road that I follow
Leaves me with no tomorrow
I need someone to show me the way
Repeat

All I can do is cry over you
And hope you return someday
All I can do is cry over you
Ever since you've gone away

Baba, baba, baba
Baba, baba, baba

EVE

Words by John Bettis

Music by Richard Carpenter

Eve I can't believe
That you could mean
What you just said
Think of what you are
How very far you are from being real

Look into the mirror
Nothing there to see
Eve I can't believe
You'd really leave him

Notice how her image saddens
How lonely she's become
Just once I'd like to see her happy
Before the winter comes

Eve, I wouldn't lie
The open sky is not your home
Wide as it may be
Reality is here among the stones

Thorns among the roses
Add to what is real
Eve, you are a rose
Among the thorns here

Notice how her image saddens
How lonely she's become
Just once I'd like to see her happy
Before the winter comes

I wish her only good times
Before the winter comes

NOWADAYS CLANCY CAN'T EVEN SING

Words and Music

By Neil Young

Sing, sing

Who's that stomping all over my face?
Where's that silhouette I'm trying to trace?
And who's putting sponge in the bells I once rung
And taking my gypsy before she's begun

Just singing and a dreaming of what's in my mind
Before I can take home what's rightfully mine
Joinin' and a listenin' and talkin' in rhymes
Stoppin' the feeling to wait for the times

Who's saying maybe
That don't mean a thing
'Cause nowadays Clancy can't even sing
Sing, sing

Who's all hung-up on that happiness thing?
Who's trying to tune all the bells they ring?
And who's in the corner and down on the floor
With pencil and paper just counting the score

Who's trying to act like he's just in-between?
The night isn't black, if you know that it's green
Don't bother looking, you're too blind to see
Who's coming on like he wanted to be?

Who's saying maybe
That don't mean a thing
'Cause nowadays Clancy can't even sing
Sing, sing

Who's coming home on the old 9 to 5?
Who's got the feeling here to keep him alive?
Though havin' it, sharin' it, ain't quite the same
You painted it golden nugget, you can't lay claim

Who's seeing eyes through the crack in the floor?
There it is baby, don't you worry no more
Who should be sleepin', but 's writing this song
Wishin' and a-hopin' he weren't so damned wrong

Who's saying maybe
That don't mean a thing
'Cause nowadays Clancy can't even sing
Sing, sing

Who's saying maybe
That don't mean a thing
'Cause nowadays Clancy can't even sing
Sing, sing
